Our Testing and Recommendations
I used each wand with my Liberator Axis mount and my Liberator Wanda mount – the two main wand mounts designed so you can play hands-free. I tested the toys one after the other in order to easily compare them to each other. And rated them subjectively on how enjoyable the experience was.
The Axis mount is a wedge shape. I use it lying on my stomach over the top of it. This provides space for the wand to rest at a slight upward angle on my clit.
The Wanda mount is better for a sitting, kneeling position, or doggystyle position. I can turn this mount and use it from both directions if the wand allows it.
Both mounts can be used solo or during partnered play!
Our overall scores for each wand are a combination of their performance ratings with both the Axis and Wanda mounts.
Axis Mount
The Axis is the more effortless wand mount, since I can just lie on my stomach and enjoy the vibes – I do no work at all! My partner and I especially enjoy using this mount during sex too.
I test wands with the Axis mount by inserting them into the wand slot. I then lie across the mount on my stomach with the taller section supporting my hips and my head near the shorter end.
I assess whether the wand stays inserted at the right depth. Wands with very thin and short handles do not stay in place as well and score lower. Some were too thin or small to be held at all by the Axis mount. These toys score a “0”.
Wands with medium to large handles tend to stay more firmly in place where I want. And these score more highly. With the exception of the O-Wand, which has a thick loop on the handle and is too wide to be inserted into the mount.
Besides staying securely in the mount, I assess the stimulation quality and comfort. Since the wand is held on its side (slightly angled upward), larger heads provide more surface area to reach your clit. This is helpful for achieving good contact so the vibes travel well. And also helps to distribute the pressure more evenly so there is not too much pressure in one area that feels uncomfortable. So taller, broader heads score better.
And since the wand’s stimulation primarily comes from the side of the head with this mount, I look out for uncomfortable seams. If the toy has a sharp edge along the side of the head, I deduct points as this does not give an even surface for comfortable, quality stimulation.
Toys that scored a 9 or higher provided enjoyable, comfortable pressure and stayed secure in the wand mount! And there are several great options in that 9-or-higher group.
Though there are three stand-out options: The BMS PalmPower Extreme (my favorite), Dame Com, and Lelo Smart Wand 2 (Large). What really sets these apart, in addition to the larger heads and secure fit, is their curved handle or angled head.
That curve allows the toy’s head to angle upward a bit more than the others. This gives more firm pressure against my clit without having to contort my body or do any extra work. These are the three I most enjoy using with my Axis mount.
Wanda Mount
Since you straddle the Wanda, this mount is best if you enjoy positions where you’re kneeling or on your hands and knees. If the wand is short, you can also sit directly onto the mount and press your weight into the wand.
I test wands with the Wanda mount by inserting them into the slot and straddling the mount. I test each wand with the mount facing each direction to find a good position. There can be several ways to use a wand with this mount, so you need to play around more to find a good setup.
First off, I assess whether the wand stays inserted at the right depth. Wands that are too large or small for the mount score a “0” since they cannot be held in place.
With each wand, I make slight adjustments to the wand’s angle, the mount’s position, and my body position to look for a comfortable and effective setup.
In the Axis Mount, the size of the wand’s head and its angle are the most important features for getting good stimulation. But with the Wanda Mount, the wand’s overall length is most important. If the wand is too tall, you have to keep your body really high in order to reach the vibrating head while straddling the mount. Whereas short or medium-length wands allow you to sit directly on the mount or straddle it more comfortably.
I find that wands between 8 and 12.75 inches long tend to be the best height for comfortable, firm contact with your clit. The shorter end of that range is better if you want to just sit directly on the mount rather than kneeling above it. The FemmeFunn Ultra Wand and BMS PalmPower Extreme are two of my favorites for this.
And the taller end of that range is better if you prefer to kneel over the mount. I love the Viben Sultry for this!
The only wands that really just do not work at all with the Wanda are those that got a “0” for not fitting into the mount. All other wands score at least a 7. And these still provide some nice stimulation. They just don’t allow as much variety as the others or require you to position your body in a particular way in order to get good stimulation.
If you are hoping to play around a bit and experiment with different angles and uses, I recommend choosing a wand with a curve or angle to the handle. These give you the ability to change the direction the head is facing which gives you even more variety. The BMS PalmPower Extreme Ultrapowerful is a great option for this.
Other Hands-Free Options During Sex
Using a wand vibrator with a mount is an excellent way to get hands-free clit stimulation during sex, but it’s not the only way. When my partner and I want to play hands-free, we use one of these three options:
- A wand vibrator and wand mount combo
- A lay-on vibrator that I can rest on the bed and lie on top of like the Fun Factory Laya III
- A wearable couples vibrator like the We-Vibe Chorus (and others)
I personally use the first two options the most often, but each has advantages and disadvantages
Wand Vibrator and Mount Combo
Pros:
- Most powerful clit stimulation, since wands are stronger than the other vibrators
- More variety in the sex positions you can use over a lay-on vibrator
- Often the mount can double as a sex wedge to help you enjoy more sex positions
Cons:
- Can be expensive since you have to buy a wand vibrator and a wand mount
- Less variety in sex positions than a wearable that stays in contact with your clit regardless of the sex position
Lay-On Vibrator
Pros:
- Easiest to grab and go – you don’t need to set up a mount, wash a mount cover, or adjust a wearable vibrator to fit you just right
- Generally less expensive – you only need to buy one product
- More powerful than wearables
Cons:
- The least variety of sex positions
- Less powerful than wand vibrators
Wearable Couples Vibrator
Pros:
- You can be in any sex position you want. Since you’re wearing the vibe, it’ll stay in contact with your clit
- These are generally remote-controlled, so you don’t need to adjust your setup temporarily to change the power
- These often have a slim internal arm that can add some additional G-spot stimulation
Cons:
- Weaker than the other options since the wearable vibrator needs to be slim enough to comfortably wear
- These generally have a slim part you must insert in your vagina so space for your partner is tighter
- Pricey – the only ones that work well have adjustable hinges, so manufacturing them is more expensive. The cheaper ones without hinges don’t stay in contact with your clit.
- The motor has to align well with your anatomy – even the best ones may not fit you just right
Final Thoughts
While many wands work well in one or both of the mounts, the best and most versatile are mid-length wands with broad, angled heads or a curved handle. My personal favorite for hands-free stimulation is the BMS PalmPower Extreme.
