The Hitachi Magic Wands are among the most famous, long-standing, and well-loved vibrators available. What began with the Magic Wand Original has now expanded to include several (improved) models: the Magic Wand Rechargeable, Magic Wand Plus, Magic Wand Waterproof, and Magic Wand Mini.
Note: There is also a tiny version, the Magic Wand Micro. Though they look similar, the Magic Wands range in strength, vibration feel, noise, size, and more. Each fits different preferences and budgets. I’ve been enjoying the full family of Magic Wands for some time now. Whether your priority is extreme power, solo-play, partnered fun, discreet noise, portability, or something else, I’m here to help you figure out which model is the best Magic Wand for you!
I’ll share my personal experience and opinions about each. And I’ll share the results of my objective tests measuring noise, vibration frequency, battery life, and more.

One final quick note: these four wands are the official Hitachi Magic Wands everyone talks about. They are manufactured by Hitachi and distributed by Vibratex. Hitachi didn’t want their brand name to be famous for sex toys, so they dropped “Hitachi” from the product line’s name in 2013, but continued production, simply calling the product line the “Magic Wands.”
Vibrations: Power and Range

The Magic Wand Plus and Waterproof have the strongest power and widest range from low to high. They both start at a 1.9 out of 10 on low, which is great for warming up. And they reach a 9 out of 10 on their top strength (only the Doxy Die Cast has more power). I only need the first two levels to orgasm personally. I hardly use the upper two settings, but those looking for the most powerful Magic Wand will love them.
The Magic Wand Rechargeable has about 85% of the Plus’s and Waterproof’s power, which is still more than I need – I typically use the Rechargeable’s first 3 of 4 power levels. I like the additional convenience of going cordless, so I prefer the Rechargeable since it still has plenty of power for me.
The Magic Wand Rechargeable starts gently at a 1.75 out of 10. Jumps between the 4 levels are more gradual and comfortable on the Magic Wand Rechargeable, making it better for those sensitive to overstimulation. Since I don’t need the most extreme intensity, I prefer the Rechargeable.
On the other hand, if you want to avoid high intensity altogether, you’ll want to check out the Magic Wand Mini. This one has a gentler power range than the others. It has the lowest starting level – a 1.7 out of 10. And it only reaches a 5 out of 10 on high. This is still enough for me (I can even orgasm on its lowest level). And I like that the 3 power levels provide a softer experience. If you prefer moderate strength, this is a better option.
The Magic Wand Original is quite the opposite – this one focuses on high power only. The first level begins with substantial strength – 6.5 out of 10 already. And there’s only one other level, which reaches 8.5 out of 10. It has no lower warm-up levels, so I have to use another vibrator initially, and then switch to the Magic Wand Original.
Although it’s the cheapest Magic Wand, the head is not made from a body-safe material, so you’ll have to purchase a silicone cap to use with it. This makes the Magic Wand Plus more cost-effective for those power lovers. And you’ll have two extra power levels, making it more likely that you’ll find settings you love.
Vibration Frequency (Rumbliness)
Rumbly (low-frequency) vibrations travel deeper and spread through the entire area far from the point of contact. Whereas buzzy (high-frequency) vibrations remain focused nearer to the surface – which you like is a personal preference. If you don’t know what you like, most people prefer rumbly vibrations, so we rate these higher. But if you enjoy neutral or buzzy vibrations, pay attention to the Vibration Power vs Frequency graphs rather than choosing a Magic Wand with a high rumbliness rating.
The Rechargeable is the best Magic Wand for those who want something rumbly! The first three power levels are all within the rumbly range, and only the top power hits a neutral-feeling vibration quality. This is impressive for its strength, and the other Magic Wands are buzzier at similar power levels.
The Magic Wand Plus is the second-most rumbly. Its first two settings have excellent rumbliness. But the top two strengths feel neutral to moderately buzzy. This is partially because the Plus’s top level is stronger than the Magic Wand Rechargeable’s. As you increase power, buzziness also increases. If you want to save some money, most people will be happy with the rumbliness of Magic Wand Plus’s first two settings.
The Magic Wand Waterproof is surprisingly buzzier than the Magic Wand Plus, even though their strengths are the same. You still have some rumbliness with the first two settings. But the Waterproof’s highest strength becomes extremely buzzy, which is not true for any of the other Magic Wands. If you like the intense feel of buzzy vibes at high strength, this is a positive. But most will want to go with the Rechargeable or Plus for deeper vibrations throughout.
The Magic Wand Mini has two lower power levels in the rumbly range, and the top strength is neutral. I enjoy all three power levels because I like neutral (or even buzzy) vibes when they’re only moderately strong, like the Magic Wand Mini. Both the Plus and Rechargeable are more rumbly on similar power levels to the Mini. So the Mini is best for those who don’t prioritize rumbliness.
The Magic Wand Original is neutral on low, and moderately buzzy on high. And remember, both the Original’s power levels are intense. I don’t personally find it uncomfortably buzzy, but those who don’t like high-frequency vibrators may find the sensation of this much strength and buzziness overwhelming. The Magic Wand Plus is comparably priced and provides a better range of options: two gentler, rumbly levels and a moderately buzzy top strength.
Comfort and Ease of Use

The Magic Wand Mini is the most comfortable and easy to use, mainly because it’s smaller and lighter. The handle is shorter and easier to grip. And while each Magic Wand’s head is comfortably plush, the Magic Wand Mini’s narrower head and lighter weight allow you to position it more precisely and quickly make adjustments.
And fewer vibrations travel into the Mini’s handle than the larger, more powerful wands. The Plus and Rechargeable vibrate in the handle on the lower powers only, but I have not found it distracting. And the Waterproof does a good job of dampening hand vibes too.
The full-sized Magic Wands are larger, heavier, and take a bit more effort to maneuver (especially the Waterproof). But it’s not much of an issue. Their longer handles also make them easier to leverage and apply firm pressure.
The buttons on the Magic Wand Mini, Plus, and Original also make it easier to move back and forth through power levels. Since the Magic Wand Rechargeable and Waterproof have vibration patterns (the others do not), one button cycles through patterns, and the other cycles through power levels. However, there are only four settings, so it only takes minimal effort to cycle through to a lower intensity.
The Magic Wand Rechargeable, Plus, and Mini each have an automatic shutoff after 20 minutes of inactivity to prevent them from overheating if you accidentally left them on. Some people may find this mildly annoying, but if you click a button anytime while using the wand, it won’t shut off. I’ve never had a Magic Wand turn off while I’m using it.
All the Magic Wands are generally comfortable, and I would base my decision primarily on other factors. However, I like the improved convenience of the cordless Magic Wand Rechargeable, Waterproof, and Mini over the Plus and Original. It’s nice not needing to position a cord out of the way.
Use During Sex

Again, all the Magic Wands are relatively easy to use during sex, but I especially enjoy the cordless options, so the cable doesn’t get in the way. The Rechargeable and Mini are my favorites to use during sex.
The Mini’s smaller size is particularly helpful in positions where you are facing your partner because the shorter handle is easy to maneuver and does not interfere with positioning your bodies. Its narrower head can fit more easily between you and your partner as well. Its light weight makes it less tiring in positions where you’re holding the wand upward (like in Doggystyle).
However, I also enjoy the broad surface area the Magic Wand Rechargeable, Waterproof, and Plus provide. Even though you can’t position their large heads as precisely, I don’t need to place them very near my clit because the strong power and rumbly vibrations are incredibly impactful.
The Magic Wand Original is my least favorite to use during sex. Its more rounded head loses some of the focused stimulation I can get from the cylindrical lip of the other wands. Especially in tight positions, I can’t get as much contact with its head.
Noise
I recommend the Magic Wand Rechargeable to those concerned about noise.
The Rechargeable packs the most power while remaining reasonably quiet. In a silent house, the first 2 of 4 power levels are entirely inaudible, directly behind a closed door. I personally don’t need to use the highest powers since the first two bring me to orgasm. And although the upper power levels may be audible in a silent house, turning on a box fan or playing music in the bedroom masks the sound completely. If you need to be discreet but also value strong power, the Magic Wand Rechargeable is an excellent option.
The Magic Wand Mini is also inaudible on the first two settings, but that’s not as impressive since it’s less powerful than the Rechargeable.
The other three full-sized wands are somewhat to very loud. Only the Magic Wand Plus’s and Waterproof’s lowest power remained inaudible without help from a box fan or music. And the Waterproof’s vibrations are loud enough I find them grating and distracting.
And the Original is audible on both power levels since it has no gentle settings.
All the Magic Wands were able to be masked on their highest setting with a box fan except for the Waterproof, which required loud music to go undetectable.

The full-sized Magic Wands are the most famous wand vibrators. As a result, a huge range of attachments are designed specifically to fit wands with their head size. Since the Magic Wand Mini’s head is smaller, it’s compatible with fewer wand attachments. But there are still many that fit it. For example, attachments designed for the Le Wand Petite, among others, fit the Magic Wand Mini too.
Mount Compatibility

I test my wands with the Liberator Axis and Liberator Wanda mounts, which hold your Magic Wand so you can enjoy hands-free stimulation.
All the Magic Wands work well with both mounts, but the full-sized Magic Wand Rechargeable, Plus, Waterproof, and Original work best with the Liberator Axis, which holds the wand sideways. Whereas the shorter Magic Wand Mini works best with the Liberator Wanda which holds the wand upward.
In the Liberator Axis, you’ll lie face down along the mount for hands-free stimulation. With this mount, longer handles and larger heads position the Magic Wand in better contact with your clit, so the full-sized wands are best. Each provides comfortable, plush contact with my clit for excellent hands-free stimulation. The Magic Wand Mini provides good stimulation too, but the smaller head requires you to position your body more intentionally.
On the other hand, the shorter Magic Wand Mini is best if you have the Liberator Wanda mount. With the Wanda, you’ll kneel and straddle the mount. The longer handles of the full-sized wands require you to keep your body higher. You get good stimulation, but it can be tiring after a while. Whereas the shorter handle of the Mini positions the head just above the fabric of the mount. I can comfortably lower my weight onto the head for more restful stimulation.
Power Source & Battery Life

The Magic Wand Plus and Original are both plug-in wands, whereas the Magic Wand Mini, Rechargeable, and Waterproof are cordless. Each has its pros and cons.
You’ll never need to charge your Magic Wand Plus or Original. Whenever you play, simply plug it into the nearest wall outlet. The cords are 6 feet long, so it’s not too limiting and you can always use an extension cord if you want more distance.
But you’ll need to play near an outlet, and you’ll want to position the cord out of your way (which can be mildly annoying).
The Magic Wand Plus’s cord can be completely removed during transport, which is an added convenience compared to the Original.
If you prefer more mobility or don’t like the hassle of a cord, the Magic Wand Mini, Rechargeable, or Waterproof are better. You’ll need to remember to charge these wands. But both the Magic Wand Rechargeable and Mini have two of the longest-lasting batteries of all the wand vibrators we’ve tested. The Magic Wand Rechargeable lasted over 4 hours running continuously on its highest power. And the Mini lasted 3.5 hours. The Waterproof is not far behind, lasting just over 3 hours.
Build Quality
Build quality is subjectively scored based on how solid and durable the toy feels to me. And I factor in any issues I experience with the toy wearing down over time.
All of the Magic Wands except for the Original have exceptional quality. They feel well-constructed with silky, plush silicone heads. I love the feel of the buttons and solid handles too. The necks are slightly flexible but sturdy. I can apply firm pressure without feeling like I’ll damage the Magic Wand.
The Magic Wand Original is different because the head is made of soft vinyl, which is not body-safe. This means you have to purchase a body-safe silicone cap to put on the head in order to keep it clean. The rest of the construction feels very sturdy, but the porous vinyl head makes the other body-safe Magic Wands a better option.
Cleaning
None of the Magic Wands have a waterproof rating except for the Magic Wand Waterproof, which is IPX7 fully submersible. This makes the Waterproof usable in the bath or shower, and much easier to clean since you can put it in water while scrubbing.
By contrast, the other Magic Wands should only be cleaned with a damp cloth, making sure to keep water away from electronic areas. If you are worried about preventing water damage, or just looking forward to bath/shower use, the Magic Wand Waterproof is the only option built for this. But I don’t recommend it that highly – see our recommendations for the best waterproof wands here.
Final Results
All of the Hitachi Magic Wands are enjoyable, but the Mini, Plus, and Rechargeable are the ones I recommend most. The Magic Wand Original generally underperforms in comparison to the others and is not body-safe. And I think the Waterproof is currently priced a bit too high, while being buzzier and louder than the other models.
If you’re looking for the extreme power wand vibrators are famous for, go with the Magic Wand Rechargeable or Plus.
The MW Rechargeable is my personal favorite and has the best across-the-board performance with both softer warmup levels and extreme upper power levels. It has the most rumbly vibrations of the Magic Wands. It also has the best balance between power and discreet sound levels. And I personally love the improved mobility from going cordless.
If you’d rather save some money, the Magic Wand Plus can be a great alternative. It gets a touch more powerful, though not many people will need the slight increase. It’s very similar in nearly every aspect. The major tradeoff is that it’s corded. So you’ll need to play near an outlet, and the cord can be mildly annoying while playing. But you won’t have to charge it, and it’s cheaper.
If you want the freedom to use your wand underwater, the Magic Wand Waterproof is the best choice. It’s the most expensive, louder, and not as rumbly as others, but it’s very powerful and provides extra versatility. But if you’re not tied to the Magic Wand brand, there are other great waterproof wands.
The Magic Wand Mini is best for those who enjoy gentle to moderate intensity. It doesn’t reach the extreme levels the full-sized wands do, but it still packs plenty of impact. Its smaller size and lighter weight make it easy to maneuver and great during sex. And it’s the cheapest Magic Wand!
If the Magic Wand Original is still on your mind, just remember to add a silicone cap to your cart to make the head’s material body-safe. At that point, it’s more cost-effective to purchase the upgraded Magic Wand Plus. I personally think it’s a better choice.
